The Differences:

The most clear difference between the two Kindle wireless reading devices available for purchase at the moment is that one only works in America while the other works in countries around the planet. If you make your bed somewhere besides the USA (or if you’re an American who frequently visits countries around the world) then that makes your choice (such as it is) clear; You must get the Kindle with Global Wireless.

Besides that, the obvious difference is that of their sizes. The Kindle DX Reading Device is far bigger both as far it’s display and it’s memory capabilities. It is also much larger as far as it’s cost.

The DX is 9.7 inches and the Global Kindle is 6 inches. The bigger display is particularly helpful with newspaper subscriptions (it makes it more like reading a real paper.) On the flip side, the smaller size of the smaller version may make it more easy to take around with you wherever you go.

There is also a substantial difference when it comes to memory capability. The Kindle DX can hold up to 3,500 books while the global version can hold approximately 1,500 books, magazines, & newspapers. But really, who has that many books?! Honestly, I have a very hard time believing that this huge amount of space to be necessary for most customers.

Another difference between these devices is that the DX has an auto-rotating screen so that if you flip the gadget on it’s side the screen automatically adjusts itself to be read horizontally (and automatically adjusts itself to be read vertically when you flip it back.)

The Similarities:

Both kindles have access to about 400,000 books, magazines, and newspapers which can all be purchased for lower prices than their paperback alternatives.

Both kindles have text to speech software which can turn all of your books into audio books. Yes, your Kindle will read to you!

Neither of these devices will add to your monthly bills. The way the wireless service works is a lot like the wireless for a GPS. Once you get the gadget the wireless just works, there’s nothing else to worry about and no bills to pay.

They both have a very basic built in web browswer that lets you surf the web wherever you are. It should be noted that this browser is meant for text based informational websites such as Wikipedia and blogs. It’s not for pictures or videos.

Both digital book readers have a “no glare” display that “reads like paper.” If you are concerned that reading this will be like reading your computer’s monitor then don’t be! It’s not like that at all.
