If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

How do you think, why one or another sites become popular and have good attendance? We do not consider now social networks like Facebook or Myspace which have a bit different concept in the basis. We talk about sites that are more modest, sites that are created by one person, like you.

When and why web site promotion in Internet becomes the most effective? And what are those especial “things” should be on a resource so users of the World wide web would like to visit it again and again? Tremendous design? Convenient navigation? Fast loading and convenient usability? Probably, all these answers are correct. But there should be something else on any site. And this “something” is the most important thing.

There are two more questions. The first one: why do so many people use Internet? The second one: why the most popular resources are search engines? Everything is very simple. People use Internet to look for information, and search engines direct them to those resources that contain the necessary information.

So … so … so … Eureka! The more helpful information your site contains, the more it is claimed. Search engines will adjust such a site faster. It finally will allow you to involve more visitors to your web resource.

You still have not understood, about what way of promotion we talk? We talk about the most simple and obvious way, the way that doesn’t demand the organization of expensive advertizing campaigns and the way where you do not have to turn to experts optimizers. Fill the site with a content. The content should be qualitative, adjusted not only to search robots, but also useful for consumers of your information, services or products that probably you are going to promote through the resource.

Now here is the answer to one question which has been taken out in the headline of the article. “One thing is not clear, – someone will shrug his/her shoulders, – why it is a step with the number”zero”. We will answer. Filling a site with a content is not a step, but it is more likely a process. The constant process that allows you to develop your resource. As soon as you stop this process – the resource will die, either at once, or in a painful agony.

“The step with the number “zero” concerns promotion of a resource more. There is no sense to show the site to search engines, to register it in catalogs, to make links at forums, if it has one page, and three paragraphs are published on this page only? So the first stage of promotion of a resource is filling it with content. As it has been told above, to fill with content that is qualitative and useful. Wait, till every heading of your web resource has four-five qualitative and useful materials. And you should register your web resource in search engines when it has more than 30-40 pieces of content.

These days the online technologies have become very popular. The web network is not only a place to entertain but also a space to make money. Whatever the reason is, to be presented in the Internet one needs a site. And this is when the question how to plan a website arises. Those who are looking for details on how to build a website, are advised to refer to the Web itself. It is full of docs on how to plan a website and related topics.

In any way, it wouldn’t be smart not to use this opportunity provided to us by digital technologies. Google and other search engines, social networks and forums, blogs – all of them could assist to find information on “build your own professional website” and similar topics.

The first mistake. An indistinct planning of a site and incomprehensible navigation. By the way, some business sites tend to use too many steps for achievement actually the simple purposes. If you receive letters from your visitors with a question how to use your site, probably, you should think of improvement of the navigation of the site. If you see that some tasks are carried out much more often, than others, make their performance as easy as it is possible. Try to make everything by your own hands and, it is desirable to make that for several times. Imagine yourself in your visitor’s shoes.

The second mistake. People come to Internet to find information. And if they have to look through the introduction to your resource, executed on Flash, there is a large probability, that they will not wait for the loading of the site. The starting flash splash screen is a superfluous and useless element in design of a site. The reason is that it practically does not bear any semantic loading. Of course, if your site is devoted mainly to the questions of graphic design and contain exclusively graphic content, then the usage of flash introduction is rather reasonable, especially, if you want to show your own possibilities and skills.

The third mistake. You should not use unusual and exotic types. It is not a fact that a computer of a user, who has come to your web site, has such an exotic. Besides that, non-standard types can make your texts difficult for reading. That is why it is better to stop on such types, as Arial, Georgia, Tahoma, Verdana etc. But if you want to use non-standard types on your favourite resource very much, then use them only in logos or headlines of pages, and only in the form of images.

The fourth mistake. You also should not experiment with the sizes of types. Establish the standard size of a text. Too big or too small type is difficult for reading. Try to establish the relative size of a text instead of the size in pixels. It will allow your visitors to use their preferable type size on your site.

The fifth mistake. Even if you like that links become visible or get color only when a visitor aims at them a mouse, remember that this is not very good. A visitor wants to know, where there is a link on your site, a visitor would not like to hunt for it for a long time. Use contrast colors and underlining for links. External links that lead a user away from your site, should be marked in a special way, for example, with other color or other type, than internal links. Beaten links irritate users of any site. You should check all your links on a regular basis in order to be assured that they work.

The sixth mistake (but it is not the last one at all). Too much advertising on a site. Actually, the excessive quantity of advertising only irritates a visitor, and his/her first desire is to leave a site. Especially, if you use a format of advertising that looks too obtrusive and irritating.

Nowadays the Internet technologies are very popular. The Internet network is not only a place to entertain but also a space to make money. In spite of the reason, to be presented in the Internet one needs a site. And it is the time when the question how to plan a website arises. Those who are looking for details on how to build a website, should refer to the Web itself. It is full of guides on how to plan a website and related topics.

In any way, it wouldn’t be smart not to use this chance given to us by modern technologies. Google and other search engines, social networks and forums, blogs – all of them could assist to find information on “business plan for websites” and similar topics.

This article at all is not attempt to explain how search machines in general work. However, in my opinion, she will help to understand as it is possible to operate with behavior of search robots (wanderers, spiders, robots – programs with which help this or that search system rummages around a network and indexes meeting documents) and how correctly to construct structure of a server and documents containing on it that your server was easily and well indexed.

The first reason of that I have dared to write this article, the case when I investigated a file of dens of access to my server was and has found on: lycosidae.lycos.com

That is Lycos has addressed to my server, on the first inquiry has received that the file/robots.txt is not present, and has sniffed at the first page. Naturally, it was not pleasant to me, and I have started to find out that to what.

It appears all “clever” search machines at first address to this file which should be present on each server. This file describes access rights for search robots, and there is a possibility to specify for various robots the different rights. For it there is a standard under name Standard for Robot Exclusion.

According to Louis Monier, Altavista, only 5 % of all sites have now not empty files/robots.txt if at all these files there exist. It proves to be true the information collected at recent research of dens of work of robot Lycos. Charles P.Kollar, Lycos writes that only 6 % from all inquiries about a subject/robots.txt have a code of result 200. Here some reasons on which it occurs:

* people who establish the Web server, simply do not know neither about this standard, nor about necessity of existence of a file/robots.txt.

* not necessarily person installing the Web server, is engaged in its filling, and the one who is the web designer, has no due contact to the manager.

* this number reflects number of sites which really require an exception of superfluous inquiries of robots as not on all servers there is such essential traffic at which server visiting by the search robot, becomes appreciable for simple users.

File format /robots.txt:

The file /robots.txt is intended for instructions to all retrieval robots (spiders) to index information servers how is defined in this file, i.e. only those directories and files of the server which are not described in /robots.txt. It is a file should contain 0 or more records which are connected to that or other robot (that is defined by field value agent_id), and specify for each robot or for all at once what exactly it SHOULD NOT be indexed.

The one who writes a file /robots.txt, should specify substring Product Token of field User-Agent which each robot produces on HTTP-request of the indexable server. For example, the present robot of Lycos on such request produces as field User-Agent: Lycos_Spider _ (Rex)/1.0 libwww/3.1.

If the robot of Lycos has not found the description in /robots.txt – it arrives how considers it necessary. As soon as the Lycos robot “has seen” in a file /robots.txt the description for itself – it arrives how it is offered to it.

At file creation /robots.txt it is necessary to consider one more factor it is file size. As each file which should not be indexed, moreover for many types of robots separately is described, at a considerable quantity of files not subject to indexing the size /robots.txt becomes too big. In this case it is necessary to apply one or several following methods of abbreviation of the size /robots.txt:

* to specify a directory which should not be indexed, and, accordingly, files not subject to indexing to allocate in it.

* to create structure of the server taking into account simplification of the description of exceptions in /robots.txt.

* to specify one method of indexing for all agent_id.

* to specify masks for directories and files.

Currently the Internet technologies are very popular. The web network is not only a place to entertain but also a platform to earn money. Whatever the reason is, to be presented in the Internet one needs a site. And this is when the question how to make a website arises. Those who are looking for info on how to build a website, are advised to refer to the Internet itself. There are lots of docs on how to make a website and related topics.

In any way, it wouldn’t be smart not to take advantage of this chance provided to us by modern technologies. Google and other search engines, social networks and forums, blogs – all of them could help to find information on “make a business website” and similar topics.

Search system robots and how they actually work

Records (records) a file /robots.txt

The expanded comments of a format

Each record begins since a line User-Agent in which it is described what or to what retrieval robot this record intends. The next line: Disallow. Here not subject indexings of a way and files are described. EACH record SHOULD have at least these two lines (lines). All remaining lines are options. Record can contain any amount of lines of comments. Each line of the comment should begin with # character. Lines of comments can be placed in the end of lines User-Agent and Disallow. # character in the end of these lines is sometimes added to specify to the retrieval robot that the long line agent_id or path_root is finished. If in line User-Agent it is specified a little agent_id the condition path_root in line Disallow will be fulfilled for all equally. Restrictions on length of lines User-Agent and Disallow are not present. If the retrieval robot has not found out in a file /robots.txt the agent_id it ignores /robots.txt.

If not to consider specificity of operation of each retrieval robot is possible to specify exceptions for all robots at once. It is reached by the job of a line User-Agent: *

If the search robot finds out in a file/robots.txt some records with value satisfying it agent_id the robot is free to choose any of them.

Each search robot will define absolute URL for reading from a server with use of records/robots.txt. Header and lower case symbols in path_root MATTER.

Examples:

Example 1:

User-Agent: *

Disallow: /

User-Agent: Lycos

Disallow:/cgi-bin//tmp/

1 file/robots.txt contains in an example two records. The first concerns all search robots and forbids indexing all files. The second concerns search robot Lycos and at indexing of a server by it forbids directories/cgi-bin/and/tmp/, and the others – resolves. Thus the server will be indexed only by system Lycos.

Example 2:

User-Agent: Copernicus Fred

Disallow:

User-Agent: * Rex

Disallow:/t

2 file/robots.txt contains in an example of two records. The first resolves search robots Copernicus and Fred to index the entire server. The second – forbids all and especially robot Rex to index such directories and files, as/tmp/,/tea-time/,/top-cat.txt,/traverse.this etc. It is just a case of the task of a mask for directories and files.

Example 3:

# This is for every spider!

User-Agent: *

# stay away from this

Disallow:/spiders/not/here/#and everything in it

Disallow: # a little nothing

Disallow: #This could be habit forming!

# Don “t comments make code much more readable!!!

In an example 3 is one record. Here all robots are forbidden to index a directory/spiders/not/here/, including such ways and files as/spiders/not/here/really/,/spiders/not/here/yes/even/me.html. However here do not enter/spiders/not/or/spiders/not/her (into directories “/spiders/not /”).

Currently the web technologies are very popular. The web network is not only a place to entertain but also a spot to make money. In spite of the reason, to be presented in the Internet one needs a site. And this is when the question how to make a website arises. Those who are looking for details on how to build a website, are advised to refer to the Internet itself. There are lots of tutorials on how to make a website and related topics.

Not long ago I was roaming about the space of Internet and I read about one way of promotion of your own web site. This method sounds like that: “write an electronic book, that will provide your resource with viral traffic”. I do not remember the author of the mentioned method unfortunately, but I am sure that I exactly remember the quotation. I actually would like to ask the author a few questions very much, for example: how many electronic books that could provide the author’s resource with “viral traffic”, he/she has written; and there is one more question how much time the author spent for writing the books?

And I actually have one more, very reasonable question: what should I do with such a “priceless” piece of advice, if I can hardly write a few paragraphs? The answer is very, very simple: do not think too much of that!

There are at least several reasons not to think too much about the problem of the absence of the talent to write books that can influence on the promotion of your web site.

The first reason. Tell me, do you know a lot of people who really and seriously read large texts nowadays? Do you know a lot of people who really like to read books? I am not talking about that “dragged-out tale” for eyes, that you can use in a train or a plane, but for example Theodor Dreiser or Fenimore Cooper? That’s it, the number of my acquaintances who read such books, can be count up on fingers of one arm.

The second reason. Still that “viral traffic”. Ok, you only imagine, what a book this person must write so that users really would like to download the book, to read it, to recommend it to his/her friends and so on?

Ok, ok, if you wake up in the morning and feel that there is Feodor Dostoevsky with Golthuory somewhere inside of you, and there is something that you can tell to the world, then go ahead! “Burn humans hearts with words!” But the practice shows to us, that nowadays there are not so many people who can allow themselves to turn over pages in a leisurely way, and there is also a great competition between professional writers.

The third reason. Video and audio elements play the most important role in today’s Internet, and the smaller texts are, the more chances that users will read the texts and apprehend the information. Of course, any resource needs unique content to be promoted right. But there is no need to write large electronic books. As there is no guarantee that your book will be read by someone, and “viral traffic” on your web site is more from the area of science fiction, than from everyday reality.

So, what conclusion can we make? It is better to achieve your goal step by step. First, you have to fill your resource with a unique content, then you register your web site in search engines, then……….well, we can talk about that next time.

Nowadays the web technologies have become very popular. The Internet network is not only a place to entertain but also a platform to make money. Whatever the reason is, to be presented in the Internet one needs a site. And it is the time when the question how to plan a website arises. Those who are looking for info on how to build a website, should refer to the Internet itself. There are lots of guides on how to plan a website and respective topics.

I am afraid I will not open a very large secret if I say that any web site needs promotion. This postulate is obvious like sunrise or change of season. But promotion of a web site is not as simple as it seems to be. There is a difference between the two promotions. So, (this is only my personal opinion and I am not trying to impose it on anyone) if the registration of a web site had a certain effect about two years ago, then today to make the like procedure with a newborn resource, is like to drown a kitten in a bucket.

The second point. Promotion of a web site can as paid as free of charge. But as a rule beginning web sites owners do not have enough money for the promotion of a web site, that’s why either for objective circumstances or making a conscious choice, at the beginning many prefer free promotion of a web site.

Let’s talk a bit about free methods of promotion of a web site. They are:

- Party at thematic forums. Decoding: in this case we talk about fitness, a health life style, various diets, hence it’s only fitting to find similar forums, to register on them and to take part in discussions on these forums.

- Place articles on thematic portals indicating links to the author’s resource.

- Interchange of articles and links with resources of close or similar subject matters.

- Announcements on a site about various competitions with prizes for participants.

- Organization of posting.

- Organization of groups in social networks.

Here is a practically ready plan of free promotion of any resource.

By the way, a small, but very important addition: participation in forums, creation of groups in social networks should be made long before the resource appearance in the World wide web. A person who has selected the given way for a web site promotion, needs time to become an expert at one or another forum, to gain the authority at participants of the groups in social networks.

For justice’ sake it is necessary to notice that the similar way of promotion of a resource is not simple at all. It takes a certain amount of time, and you will not get the results fast.

So, there is one way: if an owner of a web site wants to promote the resource using this method, then besides being active at a forum or in a group, the web site owner has to spend time for developing individual relations with members of groups or forums. The web site owner will have to write letters, personal invitations, to add people to his/her friends, to say in a few words, to be active in all directions. Here it is necessary to remember that it is very important to observe the balance – between informal communication and banal spam. The web site owner decides him/herself where this boundary is.

Let’s sum up. Participation in forums, creation of thematic groups in social networks is a free way of promotion of a site. Actually its the main advantage is that this method is free, and we can relate to its lacks that it demands time and certain efforts, but does not bring at once to the expected result.

Currently the web technologies have become very popular. The Internet network is not only a place to entertain but also a spot to make money. In spite of the reason, to be presented in the Internet one needs a site. And this is when the question how to plan a website arises. Those who are searching for details on how to build a website, are advised to refer to the Internet itself. It is full of docs on how to plan a website and related topics.

In any way, it wouldn’t be wise not to take advantage of this chance provided to us by digital technologies. Google and other search engines, social networks and forums, blogs – all of them could help to find info on “website strategic plan” and similar topics.

Part 1. You have to know the exact “coordinates”.

Leaving point A for the point B, all the same it is desirable to know exact coordinates of destination. In our case it is transformed to definition of the most important task and searches of the distinct answer to a question: what for I make this site? What is my ultimate goal? It is necessary to start searches of the answer and purpose definitions as soon as you have started thinking of creating your own web site.

It is necessary to tell that the more global object you choose, the better. There will be what aspire to! Also do not forget about accurate time frameworks, up to day and hour which you have defined to yourself for purpose achievement.

Part 2. Do you have a plan?

All life of a site owner is formed by certain phases. They also will lay down to the basis of the plan which will help to reach the global purpose.
Here is how «stages of the big way» look:

- We consider to what the future resource will be devoted, we search for the answer to a question «what for?»;

- We choose a domain name, a platform (hosting) on which the site will take place;

- We make or order a design;

- We analyze sites of competitors in this segment;

- We make a semantic kernel;

- We write or order a unique content for a site;

- We care of optimization of the resource;

- We test a site on a local server;

- We spread a newborn site in the network;

- We register a resource in search systems;

- We are engaged in regular updating of a content of a site;

- We care of promotion of a site, using white methods;

- We start a resource monetization (if a site is commercial);

- We define distance to the global purpose and correct its achievement.

Part 3. There is nothing impossible for me!

The process of creation of a site, and what is much more important, its promotion and support of the resource in an actual condition, this is work, in any case. But this work differs from the habitual understanding of the word “work” by the unpredictability of a result. At least, the result expressed in money. This means, that an owner of a site should have other, absolutely non-material interest in order to spend time and strengths for his/her own site day by day. That’s why the more ambitious the final purpose is, the better the result will be.

It is also necessary to stimulate yourself somehow at the intermediate stages. Tons of literature are written about that. However, the recommendations given in the literature are not shine with originality, and come to that it is necessary to mark the achievement of each control point. For example, if you like beer, then stop just drinking it, and transform each bottle into the award for an article written and published on a site, and so on. It is necessary to approach to an idea creatively and to develop your own system of encouragements and penalties.

Currently the online technologies are very popular. The Internet network is not only a place to entertain but also a platform to earn money. In spite of the reason, to be presented in the Internet one needs a site. And it is the time when the question how to plan a website arises. Those who are looking for info on how to build a website, should refer to the Internet itself. It is full of tutorials on how to plan a website and related topics.

In any way, it wouldn’t be wise not to use this opportunity given to us by modern technologies. Google and other search engines, social networks and forums, blogs – all of them could help to find info on “business plan for websites” and similar topics.

Every search machine possesses a number of features. These features should be considered at manufacturing of the pages.

Types of the search machine:

“Text-through” search machine index each word on web page, excluding only some stop words. “Abstract” search machines create a certain extract of each page.

Text-through machines is more useful to web designers, as any word meeting on web page is exposed to the analysis at definition of its relevance to inquiries of users. However for abstract search machines can happen that pages are indexed better than for the text-through. It can proceed from algorithm, for example on frequency of the use in page of the same words.

The size:

The size of the search machine is defined by quantity of indexed pages. For example, in the search machine with the big size all your pages can be indexed almost, at average volume your server can be partially indexed and at small volume your pages can not get at all to catalogs of the search machine.

The updating period:

As the Web changes continuously, search machine index all without date. However during each moment of time the references which are given out in reply to inquiries of users can be one-day prescription and can be also monthly prescription and even more.

Here some reasons why it occurs:

* some search machines index at once page on demand of the user and then continue to index yet indexed pages

* others to a thicket can “creep” on the most popular pages of a network, than on another.

Date of indexing of the document:

Some search machines show date when this or that document has been indexed. It helps the user to understand, to what “freshness” the reference is given out by a search engine. Others needs to users only to guess it.

Specified (submitted) pages:

Search machines should find any pages of any server in an ideal as a result of pass under references. The real picture looks in another way. Villages of servers appear in indexes of search engines if them directly to specify (Add URL) much earlier.

Not specified (non-submitted) pages:

If at least one page of the server is specified, search machines will necessarily find following pages under references from specified. However on it is required more time. Some machines index at once all server, but the majority all the same, having written down the specified page in an index, leave server indexing on the future.

Depth of indexing:

This parameter concerns only not specified pages. It shows how many pages after the specified the search engine will index.

The majority of large search machines have no restrictions on depth of indexing. In practice it is not absolutely so. Here are some reasons on which not all pages can be indexed:

* not too accurate use of frame structures (without duplication of references in the managing director (frameset) a file)

* use imagemap without duplication by their usual references.

Currently the Internet technologies have become very popular. The Internet network is not only a place to entertain but also a spot to make money. Whatever the reason is, to be presented in the Internet one needs a site. And this is when the question how to make a website arises. Those who are searching for details on how to build a website, are advised to refer to the Web itself. It is full of tutorials on how to make a website and respective topics.

Let’s consider some small cunnings of the web-design which application is capable not only to make a positive impression for a user about your resource, but also to provoke a desire to come to your web site again. Professional web-designers have been using these cunnings for a long time and quite successfully. All of us visit sites practically with one purpose: we do it in informational searches. But it is really pleasant to look for an information on some resources, and coming to some resources you want to close them even before loading is finished. Have you ever thought why it happens ? And why are we talking about web-design?

The primary goal of any site is to give to a user the necessary information. But here some web-masters and web-designers pay too much attention to graphic elements, probably, hoping either to surprise visitors, or to try to show the high professional level in this way. Of course, graphic is important and necessary, but it doesn’t have the greatest importance. It is always necessary to remember that information is primary, and a wrapper (read: web-design), of course, should be beautiful, but at the same time it shouldn’t pull back visitors’ attention from the main i.e. information.

Now, actually, about the cunnings. According to the results of numerous researches, a visitor of any site first glances at a part which is located at the left above. There are no logic explanations of that, probably, so human sight is arranged. But this means, that you should use this feature, and to pay fixed attention to this part of the site, having placed there either a logo, or some other important graphic information. Further the sight of a person falls a bit lower and more to the right. In this part of the site it is necessary to place the most important elements. You also have to remember that these elements should interest a user and keep him/her on your site.

In spite of the fact that in many textbooks of web-design it is told right at the beginning what types you should use, for some reasons many still tend to some exotic. Do not do that in any case! There are at least two reasons for you to aspire to classic. First, a non-standard type associates not as much with the information, as with advertising. Secondly, it would be very good, if such a type in general is displayed on a screen of a user.

One more important detail. Before considering, what the web-design of a site should be and whether to trust its creation to professionals, it is necessary to define with the main objective point and the concept of all project. First, you have to think of the conception and to understand clearly what you want it to be. Then you can inform it to a web-designer. It will allow you to save much strengths, money, and nerves also if suddenly a person who will develop graphic for your resource, misunderstands the set task. That’s why you have to understand clearly the main task of a web site if you do not want such things to happen. At last, the main objective point of a site is to bring information to a person who comes to it. And there will be many more chances that this person will come to your site again if it is created correctly and is comfortable for using.

These days the Internet technologies have become very popular. The Internet network is not only a place to entertain but also a spot to earn money. Whatever the reason is, to be presented in the Internet one needs a site. And it is the time when the question how to plan a website arises. Those who are looking for info on how to build a website, should refer to the Internet itself. It is full of docs on how to plan a website and respective topics.

In any way, it wouldn’t be smart not to avail themselves of this opportunity given to us by modern technologies. Google and other search engines, social networks and forums, blogs – all of them could help to find information on “build your own professional website” and similar topics.

A manager (administrator) — the main person on any resource. Sometimes even its owner. It depends on a manager, what will be the site promotion, its design, pages of a site and in general how fast it will be updated, whether the resource will be useful to users, or there will be one more “dead person” with news from the last century in the World wide web .

But there are keywords in texts, your site gets into the index by these words.
